Noticing Where I Really Am

Noticing where I really am: mindfulness

I realize the futility of my wasted energy. I’ve been too worked up to notice where I really am.

Past a beautiful lake, through an ancient cedar forest, over a mountain and into a lush valley near the ocean – this is my travel route each morning and reverse again in afternoon.  You’d think I’d notice and be captivated by the beauty and wonder every single day.

But I grow impatient and irritated with others who follow me too closely in their vehicles on these winding roads. Oversize headlights in the rearview mirror for what seems like an eternity, close enough that I can’t see the licence plate. Anger rises as I check the speedometer, confirming that I’m at an appropriate speed for this highway.

Finally, after twenty minutes, we reach a passing lane and I am free of the tailgater. Or am I? I stew in my resentment against the faceless driver, indulging in my pout long after his back bumper disappears ahead around the next bend.

It doesn’t take long before I abashedly realize the futility of my wasted energy. I’ve been too worked up to notice where I really am. The vehicle has gone. I am safe. And these mountains and forests are absolutely beautiful.

I’m missing the beauty now because of something that has passed.

I bring my focus back to Now. Let go of resentment with patience and compassion.
