Drowning in a sea of shoulds, have-tos, supposed-tos? Believe that self-care is selfish and that others should take priority?
It is not and they shouldn’t.
The world knocks at my door, yet I am overwhelmed and in need of stillness and self-care.
A slight twinge of guilt as I ignore the ringing phone. But I’m aware of the guilt. With mindfulness, I gently pick it up, cradling it in my hand, watching it, observing it, seeing it for the illusion that it is, then gently placing it back down and watching it float away.
The illusion comes clear. I have not been a slave to a telephone ringing. I have been a slave to my own expectations.
Drowning in a sea of shoulds, have-tos, supposed-tos. Beliefs that self-care is selfish and that others should take priority. It is not and they shouldn’t.
In reality, there are very few things that can’t wait. Just because the phone rings doesn’t mean I’m obligated to answer it. Especially if I’m in real need of self-care.
